My Body of Work.

  • Creating.

    Creating one of a kind outfits, well thought out designs, and making every detail matter is what I truly enjoy. Seeing a flat piece of fabric transform into A beautiful garment is magical.

  • Sewing.

    For as long I as can remember sewing has been a part of my life whether it be home ec. and sewing pajama pants in high school, sewing an entire bedroom set for my oldest son, or starting my own handmade children’s clothing boutique. When I decided to become a professional seamstress I promised to always educate myself and take on new challenges that will help me grow in my skill. It is my privilege to now be able to pass that knowledge onto others.

  • Imagination.

    I love recreating timeless characters! I draw a lot of inspiration from film and make believe. Although these outfits are well recognized, I use own interpretation to make them come to life.

  • Designing.

    Designing, styling, and fashion has been a longtime passion of mine. With more than ten years experience not only have I been learning the art of designing my own clothing line & creating for boutique style marketplaces, I have also found a place for my creative storytelling in theater, ballet, pageants, with a true love for costume design in the film industry right here in Oklahoma.

My Story.

Hi there….. My name is Valerie Parker

I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t styling something, making something, or dreaming up something fabulous in my head.

What started as a love of fashion and some casual sewing skills eventually became a handmade children’s clothing business. I spent several years designing one-of-a-kind pieces, traveling to markets, styling photo shoots, and discovering something that would become a bit of an obsession: the magic of a really good fit.

Because here’s the thing—I don’t believe bodies are supposed to fit clothes. Clothes are supposed to fit bodies.

That idea changed everything.

I began creating clothing for women, studying fit, textiles, construction, alterations and the million tiny details that can take a garment from it’s fine to where did you GET that?

And then, somehow, my sewing machine led me to the movies.

Today I’m a costume designer and professional seamstress working in Oklahoma’s film industry, where I’ve had the opportunity to design and build wardrobes for feature films, commercials and other productions. Costume design taught me to look at clothing differently. What someone wears can tell you who they are before they ever say a word.

I’ve also learned that the same thing is true in real life.

You don’t need a movie premiere or even somewhere particularly important to go to deserve clothes that make you feel fantastic.

That’s really what Slightly Altered has become: the place where all the different pieces of my creative life meet.

I alter clothes. I make things. I style people. I design costumes. I teach. I obsess over fabric. I can probably tell you why that dress isn’t hanging correctly before you’ve finished explaining what bothers you about it.

And I still believe what I discovered all those years ago:

Great style isn’t about following the rules. It’s about figuring out what makes you feel most like yourself.

Sometimes that requires a little imagination.

Sometimes it requires a completely different outfit.

And sometimes it just requires moving the damn zipper.
